ASTM D2047 Static Coefficient of Friction Test
James Machine
This method uses a James Machine to evaluate the static coefficient of friction (SCOF) of polish-coated flooring surfaces. The test begins by applying an 80 lb weight downward through a leather “foot” onto the flooring sample (see photo). At the same time, the sample holding table begins moving laterally away from the direction of the weight at a rate of one inch per second. The James Machine records the point at which the shoe slips as the SCOF. An SCOF of 0.50 or greater is generally regarded as a “safe” walkable floor.
