What you need to know

Most manufacturers require the application of a seam sealer along the cut edges of their carpet during installation. Failure to properly seal the seams can result in fraying, unraveling, delamination, and an unsightly seam appearance. Proper seam sealing requires that the primary and secondary backing are welded together along the carpet edges. On stretch-in installations where seam tape is used, the seams should be sealed and dry prior to seam construction. For glue-down installations, the seam is constructed while the sealer is still transferable.
