Shading, Footprints, and Vacuum Marks (Carpet)

Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Shading, footprints, and vacuum marks are lighting-related appearance conditions caused by temporary changes in pile direction rather than dye variation or material defect. As carpet is walked on or vacuumed, the pile is compressed, brushed, or laid in different directions, altering how light reflects across the surface. Fibers lying in one direction reflect light differently than fibers standing more upright, creating visible light and dark areas that may reverse when viewed from opposite directions. These conditions are distinct from matting or crushing and are commonly discussed among broader carpet problems.
