ASTM D1335 – Tuft Bind
The test method used to measure the force required to remove a tuft from the carpet backing. Loop pile test is performed by hooking a loop and removing both the tuft legs from the backing system. Loops adjacent to the one being tested are cut to ensure that zippering is not being measured
Cut pile tests are conducted by locking hemostats on one leg of a tuft and removing it. 15 tufts/loops are pulled across the 12-foot carpet width and averaged. The FHA minimum is 6.25 pounds for loop pile and 3 pounds for cut pile. The FHA minimums are normally considered absolute minimums for the industry.
