I am certified for inspections and concrete moisture testing through CFIU (Certified Flooring Inspectors University), NWFA (National Wood Flooring Association), NALFA (North American Laminate Flooring Association), and ICRI (International Concrete Repair Institute. Through CFIU, I have certifications for both residential and commercial flooring. Carpet, Vinyl (Sheet, Tile, Plank), Wood, Ceramic, and Laminate.
Through the NWFA (National Wood Flooring Association), I am certified in Wood Flooring Installation and as a Wood Flooring Inspector.
I am also certified for Laminate flooring inspections through NALFA (North American Laminate Flooring Association).
Beyond inspections, my practice also includes moisture testing in concrete. This is mostly commercial, but from time to time, a residential need comes up. I am certified by ICRI (International Concrete Repair Institute) in both ASTM F2170 (Relative Humidity) and F1869 (Calcium Chloride) test procedures.
Long before I decided to go into the inspection and testing business, I got my first certification from the Armstrong Installation School in 1975 at age 18. I had been installing carpet and wanted to learn hard surface flooring. My Dad had a maintenance company and installed carpet. So, at age 15 (after school and weekends), I began by stripping and polishing floors, then cleaning carpets, then installing carpet. I installed carpet and vinyl for a number of years and then went into sales. Eventually, I worked for Armstrong Flooring in their Big Box division, handling the Houston metro area Home Depots, then through promotions, the Western US and Mexico. Later transferred to the Commercial side of Armstrong Flooring.
In 2005 I moved to T&L Distributing to become their Director of Commercial Business. My task was to build a Commercial Division. Hire a commercial sales and specifications team, acquire products, and build sales. I did that along with other responsibilities for 14 years. Those jobs gave me the opportunity to work with some of the best people in the industry. In both those positions, I dealt with commercial and residential flooring of many types. Wood flooring including bamboo and stranded bamboo, Vinyl of all types, Laminates, WPC/SPC, Carpet, Ceramic, and Porcelain tiles. Worked with product design, marketing, and managing the sales of those products. For both manufacturers and distributors, I inspected and tested many floors. As needed, I commissioned and reviewed inspection reports to resolve product and installation issues.
I value the relationships I have developed with flooring professionals across the spectrum of installers, contractors, dealers, distributors, and manufacturers from all types of flooring and sundry products. Together, they help me stay abreast of the constantly changing and evolving flooring industry.
In 2019 I obtained 3rd party certifications and began my inspection and moisture testing business. It has been a very busy few years!
I truly enjoy this segment of the flooring business because I get to use my experiences from all the years of installing flooring, developing, marketing products, and reviewing issues. Then carefully perform an inspection or moisture test and provide a report.
